Impact: 30+ families benefiting

In the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, where the waters of Lake Jipe sustain communities across two nations, a quiet revolution is taking root. Permaculture gardens, once an unfamiliar concept to the farming families of Jipe, are now transforming how communities think about food security, water conservation, and their relationship with the land.

The Challenge

For decades, communities around Lake Jipe have faced increasing pressure on their agricultural lands. Climate change has made rainfall unpredictable, while traditional farming methods have depleted soil nutrients. Many families found themselves caught in a cycle of declining yields and growing food insecurity.

A New Approach Takes Root

Working alongside local farmers, Eco Jipe introduced permaculture principles that work with nature rather than against it. The first demonstration garden was established in Mkocheni village, showcasing techniques like mulching, companion planting, and water harvesting that dramatically reduce the need for external inputs.

Growing Impact

Today, over 30 families have adopted permaculture practices, with five community gardens serving as learning centers for the broader region. Families report not only improved food security but also a renewed sense of connection to the land they steward.
