Impact: 86 fishers trained

Lake Jipe is home to the endangered Jipe tilapia, a species found nowhere else on Earth. For years, overfishing and habitat degradation threatened to push this unique fish toward extinction. Today, a community-led revival is changing that story.

A Lake Under Pressure

Decades of unsustainable fishing practices had depleted fish stocks to critical levels. Fishers were catching smaller fish and working longer hours for diminishing returns. The Jipe tilapia, once abundant, had become increasingly rare.

Training a New Generation of Fishers

Eco Jipe partnered with local Beach Management Units (BMUs) to train 86 fishers in sustainable practices. This included proper net mesh sizes, seasonal fishing restrictions, and habitat protection measures.

Signs of Recovery

Two years into the program, fish populations are showing signs of recovery. Fishers report catching larger fish and spending less time on the water. The revival of the BMUs has given communities a voice in managing their own resources.
